What it is — 5-Amino-o-Cresol (INCI: 5-Amino-o-Cresol) is an aminophenol derivative used as a coupler in oxidative hair colour.

What it does — Like other couplers it carries no colour by itself. It pairs with a primary intermediate under a peroxide developer to form pigment inside the hair, and the shade it pushes towards is warm brown through auburn.

Typical use — It sits at low percentages in permanent hair colour, usually as one of several couplers chosen together to land a particular shade.

Who it suits / good to know — It belongs to the same family of oxidative dye ingredients that carry a known risk of contact allergy, and sensitivity to one member of that family often means sensitivity to others. Not for eyebrows or lashes.
