Basic Yellow 87
FunctionSemi-permanent basic dye
What it is — Basic Yellow 87 (INCI: Basic Yellow 87) is a cationic, or *basic*, hair dye — a ready-made colourant that needs no peroxide developer.
What it does — It carries a positive charge and is attracted to the slightly negative charge of weathered hair, so it settles on the surface of the strand rather than forming colour inside it. On its own it deposits a warm yellow-gold tone; in practice it is almost always blended with blue and orange basic dyes, because a natural-looking brown or black needs warmth underneath it or the result reads flat and grey.
Typical use — Grey-toning shampoos and treatments, semi-permanent colour and colour-refreshing conditioners, always as one component of a shade blend.
Who it suits / good to know — It brings no oxidative-dye chemistry and no peroxide, so it sidesteps the PPD-class allergens behind most hair-dye reactions. In exchange, the tone builds over repeated washes and washes back out. Yellow tones are the first to fade from a blend, which is why gradual colour can drift cooler over time. It may temporarily stain skin and nails.
Safety — DHALIORA grades it mid risk: a surface-deposit colourant, much gentler than an oxidative dye, but still a dye in contact with the scalp. This reflects the ingredient in general and is not medical advice; patch-test if your scalp is easily irritated.
