What it is — Dexpanthenol, also known simply as dexpanthenol and marketed as Pro-Vitamin B5 (INCI: Panthenol/Dexpanthenol), is the alcohol form of pantothenic acid used as a humectant and conditioning agent.

What it does — It attracts and holds water and is commonly used to help condition and soften hair and skin for a smoother feel; it is a familiar ingredient in scalp and hair-care formulas.

Typical use — Found in shampoos, conditioners, scalp tonics, serums and moisturizers.

Who it suits / good to know — Broadly suitable across skin and hair types and generally well tolerated, including on sensitized skin. It layers easily with other humectants.
