What it is — Erythorbic Acid (INCI: Erythorbic Acid) is a stereoisomer of ascorbic acid, used as an antioxidant rather than as a skin-brightening active.

What it does — It scavenges oxygen and slows unwanted oxidation. In hair colour that matters twice over: it keeps the dye precursors stable in the bottle, and it holds the reaction back until the developer is mixed in.

Typical use — It appears at low levels in oxidative hair colour, and elsewhere as a general formula stabiliser.

Who it suits / good to know — It is chemically close to vitamin C but has little of its skin-care activity, so it is there to protect the formula rather than to do anything for you. Broadly well tolerated.
