What it is — Gluconolactone (INCI: Gluconolactone) is a mild exfoliating ingredient.

What it does — It is commonly used as a polyhydroxy acid (PHA) with gentle exfoliating and antioxidant effects.

Typical use — It is used in gentle exfoliating toners, essences and treatments to help smooth the look of the skin surface. Gentle, gradual exfoliation is usually kinder to the barrier than aggressive treatments.

Who it suits / good to know — Gentler than strong acids, but any exfoliation can increase sensitivity; daytime sun protection is sensible. Introduce slowly if your skin is reactive. Ease in slowly and pay attention to how your skin responds before increasing use.
