What it is — Lactic Acid (INCI: Lactic Acid) is an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA), commonly produced by fermentation, that also helps adjust a formula's pH.

What it does — It is commonly used to gently exfoliate the skin's surface and to support hydration, for a smoother, brighter-looking finish. At low levels it mainly serves to balance pH.

Typical use — It appears in exfoliating toners, serums, peels and masks, and as a pH adjuster in many other products.

Who it suits / good to know — Often chosen for dull or uneven-looking skin, and generally regarded as one of the gentler AHAs, though it can still sting or irritate and increases sun sensitivity. Daytime sunscreen is sensible.
