Laureth-3
FunctionEmulsifier
What it is — Laureth-3 (INCI: Laureth-3) is lauryl alcohol with three ethylene oxide units attached, which makes it an oil-leaning member of the laureth family.
What it does — It emulsifies. Because it carries only a short water-loving tail it sits towards the oil side and is usually paired with a longer laureth to build a stable system.
Typical use — It appears in shampoos, hair colour and cleansing products at low percentages, generally alongside Laureth-20 or similar.
Who it suits / good to know — Well tolerated. Ethoxylated ingredients as a group attract questions about 1,4-dioxane as a manufacturing by-product; this is controlled by purification at the supplier level and is a process concern rather than a property of the ingredient.
Safety — DHALIORA grades it low risk in its EWG-style, ingredient-by-ingredient review. This reflects the ingredient in general and is not medical advice; patch-test if your skin is easily irritated.
