Oat Protein Extract

Low risk

Also known asAvena Sativa (Oat) Protein, hydrolyzed oat protein, Avena sativa

FunctionProtein conditioner

What it is — Oat Protein Extract is the protein fraction of oat grain (Avena sativa), often partly hydrolysed into smaller peptides so it can interact with the hair surface. Oats also contribute beta-glucan and avenanthramides, the compounds behind colloidal oatmeal's soothing reputation.

What it does — It forms a light film on the hair that smooths the cuticle, improves manageability and helps the hair hold water; on the scalp it is soothing. It is not a colourant.

Typical use — Conditioners, shampoos for sensitive scalps, colour shampoos and skin care. In the GDS Hair Dye Shampoo it is declared in the Black formula, alongside peony root, sage, black bean, aloe, dodder seed and silver vine extracts.

Who it suits / good to know — Suits colour-treated, dry and fine hair alike; protein films are light. People with a coeliac diagnosis sometimes ask about oats in cosmetics — a rinse-off product is not a dietary exposure, but note its presence if that matters to you.

Safety — The US Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) has assessed oat-derived ingredients as safe in cosmetics, and it is not restricted under the EU Cosmetics Regulation. Oat allergy is rare but reported; patch-test if you have reacted to oats on the skin before. This is general information, not medical advice.

Why we grade it Low: Low risk — a food-derived protein with no regulatory restriction and a long record of safe cosmetic use; the CIR has assessed oat-derived ingredients as safe.

How grades are set — Risk reflects our own reading of publicly available safety data, an EWG-style reading shown at the worst-case grade we've assigned this ingredient across products. It isn't a third party's proprietary score, and it isn't medical advice. Always read the packaging and patch-test where indicated.
