What it is — Phosphoric Acid (INCI: Phosphoric Acid) is an inorganic acid used to adjust pH.

What it does — It lowers pH. In a peroxide developer that matters a great deal: hydrogen peroxide is only stable on the acidic side, so a trace of acid is what keeps the developer from decomposing on the shelf.

Typical use — It appears at very low levels, purely as a pH adjuster, in developers, cleansers and colour products.

Who it suits / good to know — Concentrated it is corrosive, but in a finished cosmetic it is present in tiny amounts and fully neutralised into the formula's buffer system. What reaches your skin is a pH value, not the raw acid.
