Ingredient

Sodium Sulfate

Low risk

Also known as소듐설페이트, sodium sulphate

FunctionViscosity adjuster

What it is — Sodium Sulfate is a simple inorganic salt. It is not a sulfate surfactant: despite the similar name, it does not cleanse or foam the way sodium lauryl sulfate or sodium laureth sulfate do. It is also a different ingredient from sodium sulfite.

What it does — It is mainly used to adjust viscosity, thickening surfactant systems such as shampoos in the same way as sodium chloride.

Typical use — Found in shampoos, cleansers and colour shampoos, usually at low levels.

Who it suits / good to know — Generally suitable across skin and scalp types at the levels used.

Safety — DHALIORA grades it low risk. This is general information, not medical advice; patch-test if your skin is sensitive.

Why we grade it Low: Low risk — a simple inorganic salt used, like sodium chloride, to thicken surfactant bases; no sensitisation concern.

How grades are set — Risk reflects our own reading of publicly available safety data, an EWG-style reading shown at the worst-case grade we've assigned this ingredient across products. It isn't a third party's proprietary score, and it isn't medical advice. Always read the packaging and patch-test where indicated.
