Sunscreen Reapplication in the Real World: Stick vs Mist vs Cushion

It's two in the afternoon, you're outside, and you have three things in your bag that all say SPF50+ on them. A stick, a mist, a cushion compact. Any of them takes about fifteen seconds to use, which is exactly why you bought them.
The question is whether fifteen seconds puts enough product on your face to matter. We went looking for the research and found a great deal of it on how much sunscreen people apply, and almost none on how much these three formats deliver.
That gap is the piece. We can tell you what forty years of dosing research says. We cannot tell you how many passes of a stick equals a full application, because as far as we can find, nobody has measured it and published the answer.
Every SPF number on every bottle is measured at 2 mg of product per square centimetre of skin, written into US regulation at 21 CFR 201.327. In the field, people apply about 0.39 mg/cm². The relationship between dose and protection is exponential rather than linear, so at a quarter of the test dose you are not getting a quarter of the labelled SPF — you're getting closer to its fourth root. In one study of 31 people, an SPF 50+ product delivered an effective SPF of about 3.2 on a single application and 8.6 on two. Sticks and cushions hold 18 g and 12 g respectively, which at a full facial dose is roughly fifteen and ten applications per unit — so if yours is lasting six months, that is your answer. Reapply twice in a row, and do it early rather than on the two-hour clock.
The number every SPF on the shelf is tested at
The FDA writes it out plainly: apply the sunscreen test product and the SPF standard "at 2 milligrams per square centimeter (mg/cm²) to their respective test sites." That single line, buried in 21 CFR 201.327, is where every SPF 50 claim in an American drugstore comes from. The international test method uses the same figure.

Autier and colleagues handed SPF 10 and SPF 30 bottles to 148 European students heading off on summer holiday and weighed what came back. Complete data for 124 of them. Median thickness applied: 0.39 mg/cm² — about a fifth of the tested dose. It didn't vary by sex, by skin type, by holiday destination, or by which SPF number was on the bottle.
Petersen and Wulf reviewed the field in 2014 and put the real-world range at 0.39 to 1.0 mg/cm². Their word for current labelling was that it "overrates the protective effect."
Half the dose is not half the protection
This is the part that changes how you should think about a top-up. Faurschou and Wulf tested 20 volunteers across five marked skin sites at 0.5, 1, 2 and 4 mg/cm² and fitted the results. The dose–response curve was exponential, r² of 0.903 — not a straight line.

Curves like that punish shortcuts in a way straight lines don't.
Practically: at 1 mg/cm², half the test dose, you land near the square root of the labelled number. At 0.5 mg/cm², roughly what people actually manage, you land near its fourth root. An SPF 50 at a quarter dose is not an SPF 12.
Heerfordt and colleagues then photographed 31 people under UV fluorescent light after they applied sunscreen once, and again after a second consecutive application. A single pass missed a median 20% of the body surface entirely. Two passes cut the missed area to 9%. Effective SPF from a 50+ product went from about 3.2 to about 8.6. And even applying twice, only 19% of participants reached the reference dose.
Nineteen percent, on the second try, in a study where people knew they were being measured. We have not found a study that reports what happens on the third.
So we weighed the three formats
Our Neerg stick is 18 g. The Marshique cushion is 12 g. The Day&Blue mist is 50 ml, most of which is alcohol and water rather than filter.

Take a face and neck at roughly 600 cm². That figure gets quoted everywhere and we could not trace it to a primary source we'd stand behind, so treat it as a working number rather than a fact — though it sits close to the SCCS's own daily-use figure for face cream, 1.54 g, which we dug up while writing about price per millilitre. At 2 mg/cm², a full facial dose is about 1.2 g.
Which makes the 12 g cushion roughly ten full applications and the 18 g stick roughly fifteen.
Nobody uses a cushion ten times and throws it away. If yours is lasting a season, you are applying somewhere around a tenth of a test dose per use, and the exponential curve above tells you what that buys.
The one controlled experiment we found on delivery mechanics is Harben and colleagues, who put pump bottles against squeeze bottles in a randomised trial. Pumps delivered 0.31 mg/cm² less than squeeze bottles — about 1.09 against 1.38 — with a p-value under .0001. Label warnings telling people to apply generously changed nothing measurable. That's not stick or spray data and we won't pretend it is. It does establish that the container alone moves the dose, which is the assumption everything else in this piece rests on.
What nobody has measured
There is no published study counting how many passes of a sunscreen stick reach 2 mg/cm². We searched for one for a long time. Everything we found making that claim — three passes, five passes, "until it looks wet" — traced back to brand pages and blogs estimating from first principles, which is not the same thing as a measurement.

Sprays are slightly better served. Broussard and colleagues published a research letter in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology in 2020 characterising spray application area density — the one paper that goes directly at this. We could not get past the paywall to read its numbers, so we are telling you it exists rather than quoting figures we haven't seen, and we've left it out of the reference list below for the same reason. If you have institutional access, that's the one to pull.
Regulators have looked at sprays, though not for the reason you'd want. The FDA's 2021 proposed order keeps spray sunscreens conditionally rather than unconditionally recognised as safe and effective, "subject to testing necessary to minimize potential risks from unintended inhalation (particle size restrictions) and flammability." The open questions are about your lungs and about open flames. Delivered dose isn't among them.
For cushions and powders there is nothing at all.
No FDA order singles them out the way the 2021 order singles out sprays. No EU or Korean guidance we could find addresses the format's application amount. And we located no primary measurement, anywhere, of how much SPF a cushion compact achieves in practice — which is remarkable for a format that has been a default in Korean routines for well over a decade and now sits on shelves in every market that imports them.
So the honest state of the literature is: sprays have one paper we couldn't read, sticks have none, cushions have none, and the whole category is regulated on chemistry rather than on delivery. The FDA can tell you which filters are recognised as safe and effective. It has nothing to say about whether the thing dispensing them puts enough on your face.
What our screening found
Our own product copy already admits the problem, which we'd rather point at than quietly leave sitting there. Under the Day&Blue sun mist, the second thing we list as a downside reads: "A mist only reaches its SPF if you apply generously and evenly; a light spritz is not full protection." We wrote that, we still score the product 8.9, and we sell it as a reapplication mist. All three of those can be true at once, but a reader is entitled to notice the tension. The deeper issue is what our score is: a screen of the ingredient list. It reads filters, flags irritants, checks the free-of claims. It has no view whatsoever on whether the format in your hand will deliver 2 mg/cm². That is why the Marshique cushion scores 9.5 — an all-mineral filter deck with niacinamide and adenosine and nothing we'd flag — while sitting in a 12 g compact that most people will stretch over a year. Both facts are real. Only one of them is in our number.
Neerg Air Touch Sun Stick SPF50+ 18g
The matte, dry finish that reviewers like is also what makes it easy to under-apply — a stick that glides thin feels finished before it is. Four modern filters including Tinosorb S, and added fragrance, which we flag.
Marshique Serum Glow Tone-up Sun Cushion SPF50+ 12g
Zinc and titanium only, no chemical filters, and our own listing warns that over-applying leaves a cast — advice that pulls against everything above. Twelve grams is about ten full facial doses, so budget it as a top-up rather than a morning base.
The practical takeaway
Apply twice in a row, every time. Heerfordt's 31 participants cut their missed area from 20% to 9% doing nothing more clever than that, and the effective SPF roughly doubled. It costs you thirty seconds.

Reapply early rather than on the clock. Diffey modelled this in 2001 and the recommendation is unintuitive: put it on 15 to 30 minutes before you go out, then again 15 to 30 minutes after you're out — not two hours later. Reapplying at the twenty-minute mark left people with 60 to 85% of the cumulative UV they'd have taken waiting for the two-hour reminder.
Treat the stick, the mist and the cushion as top-ups on an adequate base, not as the base itself. A format you can use over makeup in a lift is worth having precisely because you'll actually use it, and a real reapplication beats a theoretical one every time. Just don't let the morning application be the thin one, because that's the layer the other two are topping up rather than replacing.
