The grey-coverage shampoos that outsell or sit beside GDS on Amazon and Olive Young, put through the same ingredient screen we use on our own bottle. Two of them are gentler on paper because they are not permanent dyes at all. The rest use the same chemistry GDS does — the difference is what else is in the bottle.
Two kinds of product share this shelf. Permanent oxidative dyes (GDS, Polar, Bablabear, Levero) form colour inside the hair and hold until it grows out. Gradual toners (Just for Men Control GX, Ryo, Treatroom) deposit tone over weeks and rinse back out when you stop.
The toners screen higher because they skip the dye intermediates. That is a real advantage if you want a soft blend and are happy to keep applying. It is not the same job as covering white hair permanently.
Among the permanent dyes, the core is the same — PPD or PTD, resorcinol, peroxide, an alkaliser. What separates them is the supporting list: DEA foam boosters, extra intermediates, fragrance allergens. That is where GDS screens ahead.

Amazon's #1. Skips PPD and resorcinol entirely, which is why it screens highest of the set — but it is a gradual reducer: colour dims over weeks and drifts back if you stop. GDS is a permanent oxidative dye that colours on the first wash and holds.

Permanent dye or gradual toner.
Permanent oxidative dye
GDS, Polar, Bablabear, Levero. Small dye molecules enter the hair and oxidise into pigment too large to wash out. Full coverage builds over two or three washes and holds until the hair grows. Carries PPD or PTD and resorcinol, so a 48-hour patch test every time.
Gradual toner
Just for Men Control GX, Ryo, Treatroom. Basic dyes or reducers that deposit tone on the surface a little more each wash. Gentler ingredient lists, no permanent result: stop using it and the grey comes back over a few weeks.

On our ingredient screen the gradual toners score highest — Just for Men Control GX, Treatroom and Ryo — because they skip the oxidative dye intermediates. They are also not permanent: the tone builds over weeks and fades when you stop. Among permanent dyes, GDS screens ahead of Polar, Bablabear and Levero on the supporting ingredients, not on the dye core, which is the same class in all four.
Is GDS better than Just for Men Control GX? +–
They do different jobs. Control GX is a gradual reducer: gentler list, no PPD or resorcinol, colour that dims over weeks and drifts back if you stop. GDS is a permanent oxidative dye: colour lands on the first wash, full coverage on heavy grey builds over two or three, and it holds until the hair grows out.
Which hair dye shampoos contain PPD? +–
Of the six here, Polar, Bablabear and Levero list p-phenylenediamine, as does GDS Black. GDS Brown and Dark Brown use toluene-2,5-diamine (PTD) instead, a close relative that cross-reacts. Control GX, Ryo and Treatroom use no oxidative intermediates at all.

Because it is a permanent dye and they are toners. Our screen grades hazard and exposure ingredient by ingredient, and PPD, PTD and resorcinol carry our highest grade wherever they appear. Within the permanent-dye group GDS carries the shortest mid- and high-risk list.
