Ingredient

Aminomethyl Propanediol

Mid risk

FunctionpH Adjuster

What it is — Aminomethyl Propanediol (AMPD) is a small amino-alcohol used to neutralize acidic thickeners like carbomer and set a formula's pH.

What it does — It converts carbomer into a smooth, stable gel network and keeps the finished lotion at a skin-comfortable pH. It has no skincare effect of its own.

Typical use — Appears near the end of ingredient lists at fractions of a percent, almost always alongside carbomer or similar gelling agents.

Who it suits / good to know — At the trace levels used in finished products it is well tolerated across skin types; concerns in safety literature relate to high concentrations in raw form, not to finished cosmetics.

Safety — DHALIORA grades it mid risk as a class precaution for alkaline neutralizers, while noting it is considered safe as used in rinse-off and leave-on cosmetics. This is general information, not medical advice.

Why we grade it Mid: Mid risk — alkaline neutralizer; safe at the trace levels used, graded mid as a class precaution.

How grades are set — Risk reflects our own reading of publicly available safety data, an EWG-style reading shown at the worst-case grade we've assigned this ingredient across products. It isn't a third party's proprietary score, and it isn't medical advice. Always read the packaging and patch-test where indicated.
