BHT

Also known asButylated Hydroxytoluene

FunctionAntioxidant (Synthetic)

What it is — BHT (Butylated Hydroxytoluene) is a synthetic antioxidant.

What it does — It protects oils, waxes and UV filters from oxidation, keeping the formula stable and effective through its shelf life.

Typical use — Trace amounts (typically well under 0.1%) in products with oxidation-prone ingredients, such as sunscreens.

Who it suits / good to know — At cosmetic trace levels it is considered safe by major safety panels, but because some long-term animal data at high doses is debated, clean-beauty formulators often replace it with tocopherol.

Safety — DHALIORA grades it mid risk in its EWG-style, ingredient-by-ingredient review — a precautionary grade for the ingredient class, not a flag on this product's dose. Not medical advice; patch-test if your skin is easily irritated.

Why we grade it Mid: A synthetic preservative antioxidant with debated long-term data at high doses; used here at trace levels to stabilize the formula, but we grade it mid out of caution.

How grades are set — Risk reflects our own reading of publicly available safety data, an EWG-style reading shown at the worst-case grade we've assigned this ingredient across products. It isn't a third party's proprietary score, and it isn't medical advice. Always read the packaging and patch-test where indicated.
