What it is — Iron Oxides are inorganic mineral pigments, listed by colour index number: CI 77491 red, CI 77492 yellow, CI 77499 black. Blended together they make the full range of browns.

What it does — They colour by sitting on the surface. Nothing reacts and nothing penetrates, which is exactly why a pigment cover is not a dye: the colour is physically deposited and comes away when you wash it.

Typical use — They appear in foundations, brow products, root touch-up sticks and powders wherever a natural-looking brown or black is needed.

Who it suits / good to know — Among the most inert colourants available, and a common choice for sensitive skin because they neither oxidise nor sensitise the way synthetic dyes can. They do transfer onto fabric while they sit on the surface.
