Isostearyl Isostearate

Low risk

FunctionEmollient

Isostearyl isostearate is an ester of isostearyl alcohol and isostearic acid — a branched, liquid-wax emollient that gives formulas a cushioned, velvety glide without the greasy trail of heavier oils. It also supports the skin barrier by filling in surface gaps between corneocytes. In emulsions and two-phase products it typically sits near the top of the oil phase as the texture-setter.

Why we grade it Low: EWG-style low. A large, stable ester with a long cosmetic safety record; note it is sometimes listed as comedogenic-leaning for very acne-prone skin.

How grades are set — Risk reflects our own reading of publicly available safety data, an EWG-style reading shown at the worst-case grade we've assigned this ingredient across products. It isn't a third party's proprietary score, and it isn't medical advice. Always read the packaging and patch-test where indicated.
