What it is — Tocopherol (INCI: Tocopherol) is a form of vitamin E, a fat-soluble (lipophilic) antioxidant. It occurs naturally in many plant oils and is also produced for cosmetic use.

What it does — It is commonly used as an antioxidant that helps protect the oil (lipid) phase of a formula from oxidation, and is associated with helping defend skin lipids against everyday environmental stress. It also contributes a conditioning, softening feel.

Typical use — Found in facial oils, serums, balms, moisturizers and hair oils, frequently in small amounts and often paired with vitamin C-type antioxidants.

Who it suits / good to know — Generally suitable for most skin and scalp types, and especially common in oil-rich, nourishing formulas. Very oil-sensitive skin may prefer lighter textures.
