What it is — Panthenol (INCI: Panthenol), also called pro-vitamin B5, is the alcohol analogue of pantothenic acid; in the skin it converts to pantothenic acid. It comes in D- and DL- forms and is a clear, viscous humectant.

What it does — It is commonly used as a humectant and conditioning agent that helps skin and hair hold moisture, feel softer, and look soothed. In hair care it is known for a smoothing, conditioning effect on the shaft.

Typical use — Widely found in moisturizers, soothing serums, after-sun products, shampoos, conditioners and scalp tonics.

Who it suits / good to know — Suitable for most skin and scalp types, including dry, sensitive or post-cleanse skin that feels tight. Pairs well with allantoin, centella and hyaluronic acid.
