Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Water

Low risk

Also known asaloe vera leaf water, aloe water, aloe barbadensis leaf juice water

FunctionSoothing / Hydrating

What it is — Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Water (INCI: Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Water) is the aqueous fraction obtained from the leaf of the aloe vera plant. Formulators use it in place of some or all of the plain water in a product, so the base itself carries aloe's own sugars, amino acids and minerals.

What it does — It hydrates and helps skin feel calm and comfortable. Because it is a water-phase ingredient it usually sits at the very top of an ingredient list, and a high stated percentage is a signal that the product is built on aloe rather than merely containing it.

Typical use — Soothing gels, after-sun products, toners, essences, sheet masks and light moisturisers, especially in ranges positioned around aloe or post-sun comfort.

Who it suits / good to know — Suits most skin types, including skin that feels hot, tight or sun-stressed. It is lightweight, so dry skin usually wants an occlusive layer on top. Note that it is not the same as Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, which is the pressed inner-leaf gel.

Safety — DHALIORA grades it low risk. Aloe is rarely sensitising, but as with any botanical, patch-test if you react easily. General information, not medical advice.

How grades are set — Risk reflects our own reading of publicly available safety data, an EWG-style reading shown at the worst-case grade we've assigned this ingredient across products. It isn't a third party's proprietary score, and it isn't medical advice. Always read the packaging and patch-test where indicated.
