elastin
FunctionPeptide
What it is
Elastin here is a hydrolysed form of a structural protein, used as a skin-conditioning agent. Source can vary by supplier.
What it does
On the skin surface it acts as a film-forming humectant that helps skin feel smooth, supple and hydrated. Claims relating to "elasticity" describe the cosmetic look and feel of the skin rather than rebuilding the skin's own elastin.
Typical use
Found at low levels in moisturisers, masks and anti-ageing products, often alongside collagen and hyaluronic acid.
Safety
Graded low risk as a cosmetic conditioning protein with no notable irritation history at use levels. Patch-test a new product if your skin is reactive. This is general information, not medical advice.
