What it is — Actinidia polygama is a climbing vine native to Korea, Japan and China, better known as silver vine or matatabi. It is a close relative of the kiwifruit. The cosmetic extract is prepared from the fruit or leaves and is water-based.

What it does — In hair products it is a skin- and scalp-conditioning botanical, contributing polyphenols and small amounts of vitamin C. It is not a colourant and has no effect on the shade.

Typical use — Korean hair and scalp care, toners and masks. In the GDS Hair Dye Shampoo it is declared in the Black formula as one of the supporting botanicals, alongside peony root, sage, black bean, oat protein, aloe and dodder seed extracts.

Who it suits / good to know — Suits anyone; it is one of the milder botanicals in a colour formula. Its presence does not make the product hypoallergenic, and the hair-dye warnings on the pack relate to the dye ingredients, not to this extract.

Safety — Not restricted under the EU Cosmetics Regulation and not flagged by the CIR or SCCS. As with any plant extract, people with a known kiwi or latex-fruit allergy may prefer to patch-test first. This is general information, not medical advice.
