Behentrimonium Chloride
FunctionConditioning Quat
What it is — Behentrimonium Chloride (INCI: Behentrimonium Chloride) is a cationic (positively charged) quaternary ammonium conditioning agent.
What it does — It is commonly used to smooth hair, reduce static and help detangle, and it can also act as a mild emulsifier.
Typical use — It appears mainly in rinse-off and leave-in conditioners, masks and detangling sprays, usually at low levels.
Who it suits / good to know — Valued in hair care for slip and softness. As a conditioning quat it can feel too rich for very fine hair, and at higher levels these ingredients are more likely to irritate, so formulas keep them low.
Safety — DHALIORA grades it mid risk in its EWG-style, ingredient-by-ingredient review. This reflects the ingredient in general and is not medical advice; patch-test before wider use if your skin is reactive.
