What it is — Black Iron Oxide (INCI: CI 77499 / Iron Oxides) is a mineral pigment used to impart colour.

What it does — It is commonly used to give a product its shade and to help adjust the look of skin tone in tinted and tone-up products.

Typical use — It appears in tinted moisturizers, sunscreens, cushions, foundations and makeup, where it and other iron oxides are blended to build a specific colour.

Who it suits / good to know — Iron oxides are among the most widely used and well-tolerated cosmetic pigments. They affect appearance rather than skin function, and reactions are uncommon.
