Chia Seed Extract

Low risk

Also known asSalvia Hispanica Seed Extract, chia extract, Salvia hispanica

FunctionBotanical

What it is — Chia Seed Extract is prepared from the seeds of Salvia hispanica, a mint-family plant native to Central America. The seeds are notable for the gel-like mucilage they release in water, and for their high omega-3 (alpha-linolenic acid) content.

What it does — The mucilage forms a light, flexible film on the hair that improves slip and manageability and helps hold moisture; the fatty acids add softness. It is not a colourant.

Typical use — Conditioners, curl creams, hydrating masks and skin care. In the GDS Hair Dye Shampoo it is declared in the Brown and Dark Brown formulas as a supporting botanical.

Who it suits / good to know — Suits dry, frizz-prone and curly hair. Very fine hair may prefer a lighter formula, though at rinse-off levels the effect is subtle.

Safety — Not restricted under the EU Cosmetics Regulation and not flagged by the CIR or SCCS. Chia allergy is rare; people with known sesame or mustard-seed allergy have occasionally reported cross-reactions to chia as a food, so patch-test if that applies. This is general information, not medical advice.

Why we grade it Low: Low risk — a food-derived botanical with no regulatory restriction and no notable sensitisation record in cosmetics.
