What it is — Dimethicone (INCI: Dimethicone) is a silicone.

What it does — It is commonly used as a common silicone that coats and smooths the hair shaft.

Typical use — It is used in primers, creams, hair products and makeup to give slip, a smooth finish and a soft, blurred feel. Modern cosmetic silicones are widely used and easily removed with normal washing.

Who it suits / good to know — Generally inert and well tolerated. Preference for silicones is largely about feel and finish; they wash out with normal cleansing. If you simply dislike the feel of silicones, the INCI list makes them easy to spot.
