What it is

Disodium laureth sulfosuccinate is a mild secondary surfactant used in cleansing products. It is generally considered gentler than harsher primary detergents.

What it does

It helps create a soft lather and lift away oil and dirt, and is often paired with stronger surfactants to make a cleanser feel milder and less stripping on skin or scalp.

Typical use

Common in facial washes, body cleansers, shampoos and baby-style formulas as a supporting surfactant.

Safety

Graded mid risk here. Although the surfactant itself is low-irritation, it is ethoxylated, which carries a potential concern about trace 1,4-dioxane, a manufacturing by-product that responsible suppliers reduce through purification.
