What it is — Eggplant Fruit Extract is prepared from the fruit of Solanum melongena. The deep purple skin owes its colour to nasunin, an anthocyanin, and the fruit also contributes chlorogenic acid and other polyphenols.

What it does — In cosmetics it is an antioxidant and conditioning botanical. Its pigments do not dye hair; they rinse away. It supports the scalp and hair surface rather than the colour result.

Typical use — Korean hair and skin care, often chosen for products with a dark or purple colour theme. In the GDS Hair Dye Shampoo it is declared in the Brown and Dark Brown formulas as a supporting botanical.

Who it suits / good to know — Suits all hair types. Eggplant is a nightshade; that matters for diet, not for a rinse-off cosmetic, but it is worth knowing if you track nightshade exposure.

Safety — Not restricted under the EU Cosmetics Regulation and not flagged by the CIR or SCCS. Contact reactions to eggplant are rare and mainly reported in people who handle the raw fruit. This is general information, not medical advice.
