Garlic Extract

Low risk

Also known asAllium Sativum (Garlic) Bulb Extract, Allium sativum

FunctionBotanical

What it is — Garlic Extract is prepared from the bulb of Allium sativum. Its characteristic sulphur compounds (allicin and its breakdown products) are what give raw garlic its smell; cosmetic grades are usually deodorised or used at levels too low to be noticeable.

What it does — In hair care it is a scalp-conditioning botanical with antioxidant sulphur compounds and minerals. It is not a colourant. Folk tradition links garlic with hair strength; DHALIORA treats that as tradition, not evidence.

Typical use — Scalp tonics, strengthening shampoos and some Korean treatments. In the GDS Hair Dye Shampoo it is declared in the Brown and Dark Brown formulas as a supporting botanical.

Who it suits / good to know — Suits most hair types. The product does not smell of garlic; the extract is a trace ingredient. If you are sensitive to onion-family plants, note its presence.

Safety — Not restricted under the EU Cosmetics Regulation. Raw or concentrated garlic is a known skin irritant and occasional contact allergen, which is why it should never be applied neat; at the low levels in a rinse-off shampoo it is well tolerated. Patch-test if you have reacted to garlic on the skin before. This is general information, not medical advice.

Why we grade it Low: Low risk — a food botanical with no regulatory restriction; raw garlic can irritate skin, but at the trace, deodorised levels used in rinse-off products it is well tolerated.

How grades are set — Risk reflects our own reading of publicly available safety data, an EWG-style reading shown at the worst-case grade we've assigned this ingredient across products. It isn't a third party's proprietary score, and it isn't medical advice. Always read the packaging and patch-test where indicated.
