What it is — Hydrolyzed Jojoba Esters are made by splitting jojoba oil (from the seed of Simmondsia chinensis) with water or enzymes into its fatty acids and fatty alcohols, which are then partly re-esterified. The result is water-dispersible, unlike whole jojoba oil.

What it does — It is a humectant and film former: it binds water to the hair surface, adds softness and shine, and helps a conditioning film last through rinsing. Formulators use it to offset the drying feel of oxidative colour and to add substance without greasiness.

Typical use — Conditioners, colour creams, leave-ins and skin care. In the GDS Hair Dye Shampoo it is declared in the Brown and Dark Brown formulas.

Who it suits / good to know — Suits dry, coarse and colour-treated hair. Because it is water-dispersible it rinses cleanly and does not build up the way whole oils can.

Safety — The US Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) has assessed jojoba-derived ingredients as safe in cosmetics, and it is not restricted under the EU Cosmetics Regulation. Reactions are very rare. This is general information, not medical advice.
