What it is — Inonotus obliquus is chaga, a fungus that grows on birch trees in cold northern forests. Its black outer crust is rich in fungal melanin, and the extract also contains polyphenols, beta-glucans and betulin-related compounds drawn from the host tree.

What it does — In cosmetics it is an antioxidant and conditioning botanical. Its melanin is not a hair dye and does not deposit colour; it rinses away. Chaga's role here is scalp support, not shade.

Typical use — Korean and Nordic skin care and scalp products, usually at low levels. In the GDS Hair Dye Shampoo it is declared in the Brown and Dark Brown formulas as a supporting botanical.

Who it suits / good to know — Suits all hair types. Chaga is popular as a tea and supplement for other reasons; none of that transfers to a rinse-off shampoo, and DHALIORA makes no health claims for it.

Safety — Not restricted under the EU Cosmetics Regulation and not flagged by the CIR or SCCS. Mushroom allergies exist but are uncommon; patch-test if you have reacted to fungal ingredients before. This is general information, not medical advice.
