Isopropyl Alcohol
Also known asIsopropanol, IPA, Propan-2-ol
FunctionSolvent
What it is — Isopropyl Alcohol (INCI: Isopropyl Alcohol) is a small, volatile alcohol used as a solvent.
What it does — It dissolves ingredients that will not go into water, thins a formula so it spreads, and evaporates quickly. In hair colour it also helps dye components stay in solution.
Typical use — It shows up in hair products, tonics, sprays and cleansing formulas, generally at low levels where its job is carrying rather than treating.
Who it suits / good to know — Drying alcohols can sting broken or already irritated skin and can leave dry hair drier. At the small percentages used as a solvent this is usually unremarkable, but a sensitive or compromised scalp may notice it.
Safety — DHALIORA grades it mid risk in its EWG-style, ingredient-by-ingredient review. This reflects the ingredient in general and is not medical advice; patch-test if your skin is easily irritated.
