Lactobionic Acid
FunctionPHA / Exfoliant
What it is — Lactobionic Acid (INCI: Lactobionic Acid) is a polyhydroxy acid (PHA) that also acts as a humectant.
What it does — It gently exfoliates the surface while helping bind moisture, commonly used to support a smoother, more refined feel with a milder profile than smaller AHAs.
Typical use — Found in toners, serums, essences and gentle exfoliating products.
Who it suits / good to know — Often chosen for sensitive-leaning skin that wants gentle exfoliation; as with any acid, introduce gradually and support with hydration. Daytime sun protection is sensible when using exfoliating acids.
Safety — Graded low risk as a gentle PHA/humectant. This is general information, not medical advice. Patch-test, avoid overuse and pair with sunscreen.
