Laureth-20
FunctionEmulsifier
What it is — Laureth-20 (INCI: Laureth-20) is lauryl alcohol with twenty ethylene oxide units, which makes it strongly water-loving.
What it does — It solubilises small amounts of oil into water and stabilises emulsions. Paired with a short-chain laureth it lets a formulator dial in exactly how oil and water sit together.
Typical use — It appears in shampoos, hair colour, micellar formats and other rinse-off products at low to moderate levels.
Who it suits / good to know — Mild and widely used. As with all ethoxylated ingredients, 1,4-dioxane is a manufacturing by-product controlled by supplier purification rather than something inherent to the ingredient.
Safety — DHALIORA grades it low risk in its EWG-style, ingredient-by-ingredient review. This reflects the ingredient in general and is not medical advice; patch-test if your skin is easily irritated.
