What it is — p-Aminophenol (INCI: p-Aminophenol) is an aromatic amine used as a coupler in oxidative hair colour.

What it does — It does not create colour on its own. It reacts with a primary intermediate and a peroxide developer inside the hair shaft, and the pigment that forms leans warm — reds, coppers and warm browns.

Typical use — It appears in permanent and demi-permanent dyes at low percentages, almost always alongside other couplers such as resorcinol or m-aminophenol, which together set the final tone.

Who it suits / good to know — It is one of the dye ingredients most often implicated in hair-colour allergy, and it cross-reacts with p-phenylenediamine, so a product being PPD-free does not make it safe for someone with a PPD allergy. Never use on eyebrows or lashes.
