p-anisic acid
FunctionPreservative booster
What it is — p-Anisic Acid (INCI: Anisic Acid) is a naturally derived aromatic acid, often obtained from sources such as anise. In cosmetics it is used mainly as a mild preservative booster.
What it does — It helps support a formula's freshness and works alongside the main preservative system to keep water-containing products stable over their shelf life.
Typical use — It appears at low levels in toners, serums, creams and cleansers, usually paired with other preservatives.
Who it suits / good to know — Preservation is essential for product safety. It is a background stabiliser rather than an active applied for a skin benefit, and is generally well tolerated at use levels.
Safety — DHALIORA grades it low risk: a gentle preservative aid, generally non-irritating at use levels (EWG 1). This reflects the ingredient in general and is not medical advice; patch-test if your skin is easily irritated.
