Paeonia Root Extract
Also known aspeony root extract, Paeonia Lactiflora Root Extract, Paeonia Suffruticosa Root Extract, Paeonia lactiflora
FunctionBotanical
What it is — Paeonia Root Extract is prepared from the root of the peony (Paeonia lactiflora or, in some sources, the tree peony Paeonia suffruticosa). Peony root has a long place in Korean and Chinese herbal tradition, and its main studied constituent is the glycoside paeoniflorin.
What it does — In cosmetics it is a soothing and antioxidant botanical for the scalp and skin. It is not a colourant.
Typical use — Korean scalp care, calming skin care and herbal-blend shampoos. In the GDS Hair Dye Shampoo it is declared in the Black formula as one of the supporting botanicals, alongside sage, black bean, oat protein, aloe, dodder seed and silver vine extracts.
Who it suits / good to know — Suits all hair types, and is a sensible inclusion in a formula that also has to carry oxidative dye. Its presence does not cancel the hair-dye allergy warnings, which relate to the dye ingredients.
Safety — Not restricted under the EU Cosmetics Regulation and not flagged by the CIR or SCCS. Reactions to topical peony are uncommon; patch-test if you have a history of plant sensitivities. This is general information, not medical advice.
