petrolatum
Functionocclusive
What it is — Petrolatum (INCI: Petrolatum), commonly known as petroleum jelly, is a purified semi-solid occlusive derived from petroleum. Cosmetic grades are highly refined.
What it does — It forms a protective seal on the skin surface that slows water loss, helping skin stay soft and comfortable and supporting a stressed or compromised barrier.
Typical use — It appears in balms, rich moisturisers, lip products, ointments and overnight masks, often at meaningful levels for its occlusive effect.
Who it suits / good to know — Well suited to dry, chapped or barrier-stressed skin, and often used as an overnight sealing step. Its finish is heavy and purely occlusive, so those who dislike rich textures may prefer a lighter option.
Safety — DHALIORA grades it low risk: safe and well tolerated when well refined, though heavy and purely occlusive. This reflects the ingredient in general and is not medical advice; patch-test if your skin is easily irritated.
