What it is — Saccharum Officinarum (Sugarcane) Extract (INCI of the same name) is a plant-derived extract that is a natural source of glycolic-acid-family compounds, used mainly as a hydrating and mildly smoothing ingredient.

What it does — It helps hydrate and, at suitable levels and pH, can lend a very mild smoothing effect. In many cosmetic formulas it functions chiefly as a gentle, conditioning botanical rather than a strong exfoliant.

Typical use — It appears in toners, essences, moisturisers and gentle exfoliating or hydrating products, usually as a supporting ingredient.
