What it is
Sodium lactate is the sodium salt of lactic acid, used as a humectant and pH buffer. It is part of skin's own natural moisturising factors.
What it does
It draws in and helps retain moisture for softer, more hydrated skin, and helps keep formulas at a stable, comfortable pH.
Typical use
Found at low to moderate levels in moisturisers, cleansers and hydrating treatments.
Who it suits / good to know
At higher levels it can mildly increase sun sensitivity, so daytime sun protection is sensible.
