What it is — Glycerin (INCI: Glycerin), also known as glycerol, is a small three-carbon polyol. It can be sourced from vegetable oils or made synthetically, and is one of the most widely used humectants in cosmetics.

What it does — It draws and holds water in the outer layers of skin and hair, helping keep them soft, supple and hydrated. It is also commonly used to improve texture and support the skin's surface moisture balance.

Typical use — Found in almost every category — cleansers, toners, essences, serums, creams, masks, shampoos and conditioners — across a wide range of levels.

Who it suits / good to know — Suitable for essentially all skin types. Very high concentrations can feel tacky in dry air, so it is usually balanced with other ingredients; it works well layered under a moisturizer.
