FunctionEmollient

What it is — Squalane (INCI: Squalane) is a saturated, hydrogenated oil closely related to squalene, a lipid the skin naturally produces. Modern cosmetic squalane is usually plant-derived (for example from sugarcane or olives), which makes it stable and shelf-friendly.

What it does — It is an emollient, commonly used to soften and smooth skin and hair, reduce the feeling of dryness, and give a lightweight, non-greasy slip. On the scalp and lengths it can add manageability and shine.

Typical use — Found in facial oils, serums, moisturizers, cleansing oils and hair care, either as a standalone oil or blended into emulsions.

Who it suits / good to know — Suitable for most skin types and generally described as non-comedogenic. It layers well and can help seal in water-based hydrators applied beneath it.
